Roots to Grooves – Mitski

Welcome to our weekly podcast “Roots to Grooves”.
Each episode explores the music, life and careers of musical artists from their earliest beginnings through to their most recent releases.

This week musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley discuss the career and creative approaches of Japanese-American singer-songwriter “Mitski“.

Born in Japan to an American father and Japanese mother, singer/songwriter “Mitski” spent her formative years living in numerous countries around the world before her family finally settled in Chicago. It was during these early years, while never fully settling in any one location, or having a consistent group of friends, that “Mitski” discovered her musical passions, by spending every free moment teaching herself how to play Piano.

After dropping out of film school to instead study music, her first two albums were completed before she graduated. With these self-released titles complete, she initiated her own solo tours, playing across the US in venues large and small, even cutting her teeth in small dive bar venues with tough crowds.

In this episode of Roots to Grooves musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley explore “Mitski’s” background, her creative approaches and they spin a selection of their favorite tracks.
