Hailing from the UK, with Caribbean roots, Liam Bailey’s “Ekundayo” feels firmly planted in vintage roots reggae, with a modern soul twist.
The album is the result of a collaboration between Bailey and producer Leon Michels, a multi-instrumentalist known best for his work with El Michels Affair. The pair originally met over 12 years ago when Bailey was sent to New York to do some writing with Michels. At the time Bailey was a session guitarist, working with the likes of Amy Winehouse as well as making appearances on a number of other more pop orientated releases.
Bailey says the goal of this album was to finally create a full-length record with Michels, “without the pressures of major label opinions and agendas“.
“Ekundayo” may be a fresh release for 2020, but it has an old soul, with production techniques almost taking us back to the old days of recordings from artists such as Horace Andy.
